The director’s childhood was spent in the company of her uncle Markku, a talented artist and composer, who disappears overnight. Markku, having retired to his small house he built in Finland, begins to produce art and accumulate it in his home unbeknownst to everyone. Today, the filmmaker rediscovers her uncle’s hidden world and makes a film about his life–along with him.

Q&A with the author
Karin Pennanen
Karin Pennanen is a film director and screenwriter. Born in 1977 in Helsinki, Finland, she works and lives in the Finnish city of Espoo. After earning a Master of Arts degree in set design at Aalto University in Helsinki, she continued her studies in cinematography at Filmkunstskolen i Kabelvåg in Norway.Her training in the natural setting of the Lofoten Islands was a turning point for her directing career, and her background in set design and fine arts can be discerned from her interest in spatiality and visual effects in her films. Pennanen has directed both fiction and documentary short films, which have been screened around the world and won numerous awards.
