Many of them were to end up in prison or disappear without a trace.
\n<\/span>The story revolves around a Moroccan independent film from 1974, <\/span>About Some Meaningless Events<\/i> by Mostafa Derkaoui, where a group of young filmmakers explored the role the new Moroccan cinema should play in society. The counterculture arose from Marxist student movements which saw cinema as an \u201cinstrument for sensitization\u201d and self-discovery.
\n<\/span>After just a single public screening, however,<\/span>About Some Meaningless Events <\/i> was censored by the government. But the negatives of this long lost film were rediscovered in Spain and have recently been restored.
\n<\/span>Dedicated to the victims of censorship and oppression,<\/span>Before the Dying of the Light <\/i> employs riotously edited fragments and evokes a time of excitement about the future, before it was extinguished by the repressive years under King Hassan II. Essafi was born in 1963 in Fez, Morocco. In 1989, he completed a degree in psychology in France, and in 1991, he began working as an assistant on several documentary films. In 1997, he directed, <\/span>G\u00e9n\u00e9ral, nous voil\u00e0!<\/span><\/i>, ed \u00e8 tornato in Marocco nel 2002. He was appointed as the artistic director of Moroccan public television (SNRT) from 2006 until 2009. Ali Essafi works as a filmmaker, film curator, cinematographer, and video artist. He lives in Casablanca.<\/span>
