Hydroelectric Joy

Alexander Markov / France / 2024 / 60’ / Russian | English and Italian subtitles

ITALIAN PREVIEW

1960. Leningrad, USSR. Vadim Rudenko is a hydraulic engineer and amateur filmmaker.
He felt in love at the vacation with a biologist Vera, but their romance is interrupted by the Soviet chiefs. They sent Vadim urgently to the Egypt.
This trip to Aswan represents a great opportunity for his career, but Vadim is torn between his feelings and his sense of duty. The conquest of Vera’s heart is replaced by the conquest of the Nile. Meanwhile, the USSR is experiencing a wave of euphoria – “hydroelectric bliss”. Villages were relocated, forests and communes flooded.
For the president of Egypt  Gamal Abdel Nasser the construction of the High Dam is a challenge to show to the Western world his power. The impact of the environment, indigenous people and cultural heritage is not thought about.  For Vadim it is a dream of buying a Volga car afterword, so he can return to Vera as a winner.
