Home Sweet Home

Annika Mayer / Germany / 2023 / 68′ / German | English and Italian subtitles

Home sweet home is a film about the invisibility of domestic violence. Filmmaker Annika Mayer looks for clues, interviews her grandmother Rose about the family’s old Super8 footage from the 1950s and 1960s. These show a family in the era of Germany’s “Economic Miracle”: a luxury house with a garden in a small town, a vacation to the North Sea, a Sunday trip to the National Garden Fair. Images that have become inscribed in the collective memory of the Federal Republic, a social expectation captured on film: you record what you want to see.
But behind the facade, memories surface, fragments of a bygone era that still resonate. The film addresses the discrepancy between appearance and reality. Upon closer examination of the material, the doubts that are awakened in viewers make the invisible visible. Through Rose’s narrative, the image of family happiness in postwar West Germany is dismantled piece by piece.
