At Land, A Study in Choreography for Camera, Ritual in Transfigured Time

Three films conceived and silent by Maya Deren (At Land, 1944; A Study in Choreography for Camera, 1945; Ritual in Transfigured Time, 1946) offer to the musicians Francesca Bono (Ofeliadorme) and Vittoria Burattini (Massimo Volume) the opportunity to create a dialogue with Deren, godmother of American avant-garde cinema, through synths, drums and voice.
Il progetto, born in 2021 at Archivio Aperto Film Festival for the retrospective “Maya Deren. Amateur is a lover”, The project is a powerful tribute to the generating force of Deren’s work, since that is born a music album with the same name, Suono in un tempo trasfigurato.

Luce Movimento
Marinella Pirelli / Italy / 1967

The exploration of the relationships between colour, light, space, rhythm and movement in a working copy of the same-name film where the shooting of works and installations by artists (Bruno Munari, Lucio Fontana, others) are presented to investigate the relationship between statics and kinetics in films. The film Luce Movimento by Marinella Pirelli shows geometric and abstract forms based on the works presented in the exhibition “Luce movimento in Europa” (Galleria dell ‘Ariete, Milan, 1967) that brought together many protagonists of European kinetic art. The film shows with great precision the installations by Gianni Colombo, Bruno Munari, Gino Marotta, Lucio Fontana and Grazia Varisco while exploring the relationships between colour light space, rhythm and movement.
The film is presented here in its entirety, but without the original soundtrack, a soundtrack that mixes electronic sounds: the soundtrack of this version is in fact a contemporary interpretation of the images of the film made by Bono / Burattini for Archivio Aperto 2022.

I understood almost immediately what I wanted to achieve, justa after a few frames, I immediately took sound notes and thought that my friend Vittoria Burattini would be a perfect partner in crime to create a dreamlike and surreal sound. There is confidence and mutual esteem between us. I wanted to pay tribute to Deren, an extraordinary artist who inspired some of my favorite directors, together with another musician I admire and with whom I share a certain kind of poetics. I was looking for a sensory sabbath, an immersion into the obsessive. I wanted a message to be clear: women who create.
