I fratelli Segreto

Federico Ferrone, Michele Manzolini / Italy / 2025 / 78′

Three brothers left from nowhere, a name that seems like an omen: Segreto. From the poverty of Italy in the late 1800s to the feverish nights of Rio de Janeiro, the story of the Segreto brothers: emigrants, petty criminals, kings of the carioca night and the first filmmakers in Brazilian history. At least that is the story. In 1881, teenage brothers Pasquale and Gaetano Segreto left behind the poverty of Italy to build a new life in Rio de Janeiro. A few years later their younger brother Alfonso arrives with a Pathé camera and makes the first film in the history of Brazil. A film about the birth of cinema that resembles a fairy tale. Or perhaps a well-told lie.
