Oggetti smarriti: in cerca di Giuseppe Bertolucci
In partnership with Fondazione Bernardo Bertolucci
Giuseppe Bertolucci has made fusion the defining poetic hallmark of his cinema. From the realms of ‘conscious marginality’, he has experimented with different genres and languages, without ever abandoning his incisive reflections on the media in relation to the historical and social context. An emblematic synthesis of this creative process is a series of montage films, dedicated to politics, society and poetry, which he produced between 1996 and 2006.
However autonomous they may be, these films declare, right from their titles, a shared spirit of inquiry that makes no claim to completeness or objectivity. Years later, Bertolucci wanders through the labyrinths of three archives (the Audiovisual Archive of Democratic and Labour Movements, the Teche Rai and the Bachmann-Beer Collection in the Cinemazero archive, in Pordenone) to reconfigure the documents into new, non-canonised filmic objects, capable of revealing ‘traces and clues’ regarding the themes and figures which, following careful investigation, have stimulated a shared imagination.
