In Poland in the 1960s and 1970s, Lepold Tepper found himself at the center of a Kafkaesque situation as he attempted to flee the only country he ever called home. Trepper, a legendary figure in espionage, organized the most important spy network of World War II, the “Red Orchestra.” But his popularity made him the target of the opposing front: the Communists.

Q&A with the author

Tomasz Wolski

Director, producer, screenwriter, cinematographer and editor. He was born in 1977. He graduated in journalism from Jagiellonian University and in documentary filmmaking from the Wajda School. He has participated in the Berlinale Talent Campus and the Berlin Today Award. He has made several documentaries, including T he Clinic (2006), The Lucky Ones (2009), Doctors (2011), The Palace (2012), Not for Everyone (2012), Festival (2017) e An Ordinary Country(2020, winner of the Golden Hobby Horse at 60KFF). As an editor, he worked with Sergei Loznitsa on his documentaries Babi Yar. Context e The Kiev Trial. He is co-director (with Piotr Pawlus) of. In Ukraine, premiered at the Berlinale in 2023. He is a member of the Association of Polish Filmmakers, the Polish and European Film Academies and, since 2024, the Council of the Polish Film Institute.
