The Aesthetic Imperative

In my latest film, TWST/Things We Said Today, I show how the generation politically engaged in ’68 had been emotionally modelled by the Beatles, as part of an aesthetic project. MATCHES and DAYS, the film I now have in development, will look at football as an aesthetic project, as it was played during the World Cups between 1970-1986 by the national teams of Brazil and The Netherlands. The revolution of pop music and the emergence of football as a mass phenomenon when television took over the game are fundamental moments in the formation of 1960’s counter-culture.
Starting from those two projects of mine, we aim to reflect together on the conjuction/disjunction between the aesthetic and the political, with their impact on the realm of art from that moment onwards.
