And today, April 24th, 1970, is a day of strike: the order of the street sweepers entered history; we have to
rejoice, as if the angels descended upon the earth to sit on our park benches and on the rock walls of our
suburbs; this is the day of Revelation; every division between the Reign of The Everyday and the Reign of
Conscience has fallen; what remains untouched is humility; for he who had a real vocation knows no
violence, and speaks with grace also about his rights
– Pier Paolo Pasolini
LTHE STREET SWEEPERS STRIKE OF 1970
This unreleased documentary by Pier Paolo Pasolini, which celebrates the first street sweepers strike on
April 24th, 1970, should have been part of a collective work of art, completed in September 1970. It was
believed to have been lost, but it was unearthed in 2005 (with no audio) on the shelves of the Democratic
Workers Movement Archives (Archivio del Movimento Operaio Democratico, AAMOD) by Mimmo Calopresti.
THE PROJECT
Revisiting the strike is an audio-video project by Cosimo Terlizzi and Luca Maria Baldini, produced by the
AAMOD Foundation and Le Cannibale. It is a re-interpretation of the documentary by Pier Paolo Pasolini on the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of his birth. The voice of the director emerges from the faces of the workers, creating a semantic and auditory short circuit. The “scopini”(street sweepers) as he himself called them, become the medium for his words and for the famous speech Moravia gave at his funeral. The sound flow created by samples, synthesizers and analog instruments places the listener in an heightened perceptive disposition, guiding them along an audiovisual journey throughout the live performance.
From the original 84 minutes of filmed material a 40 minute edit was culled, a work conceived as a live soundtrack that was premiered at PAC (Padiglione Arte Contemporanea) in Milan. It was also presented at Danish Film Institute (Copenhagen), Tirana (Fustanelle IIC Italia), Valdarno Cinema film Festival, Sole Luna Doc Film Festival Palermo, Alessandria Film Festival, Spoleto Cinema Pegasus, Next Film Festival Bari, Teatro Traetta Bitonto.
